The Sumas fell to a third defeat on the bounce, and another blank in front of goal, as they were beaten 2-0 by a well organised Tadley Calleva side in the Combined Counties Premier North. Two first half goals put the nails in the Sumas’ coffin, and despite an improved second half display, they simply couldn’t find a way to put the ball in the net.
On a sunny afternoon in the furthest trip in the West direction of the season, it was the Sumas who took control of the opening stages. Brandon Curtis saw his early effort go over the bar, while Jordace Holder-Spooner had his effort saved by the keeper.
It was the hosts however with the first clear cut chances of the game, but they were denied at close range by Woodward who was quick off his line.
Despite another smart save from the Sumas’ shot stopper, it was Tadley who took the lead with a real moment of quality, as Ben Wright fired into the top corner from a long way out.
Wright grabbed his second of the afternoon just before the half time interval – the wind and sun combination causing problems for Woodward, who spilled a corner and left the Tadley number ten with a simple tap in.
The second half was scattered with stoppages, as Tadley controlled the game well. They went close to a third but a superb diving save from Woodward prevented a fierce volley finding the back of the net.
James Clark, Dan Collier, Nathan Mindomba and Enow Ojong all game on and injected positive energy into the encounter – it was the latter two who went closest to finding the back of the net. Ojong had his original effort well saved by the goalkeeper’s feet, before Mindomba’s follow up was cleared off the line.
Attention will now turn to next Saturday as the Sumas return to Lowther Road, and hopefully with that will come a return to goals and points.
